Houdini on Alcatraz 2015

Welded Steel, Chain, Key

Houdini on Alcatraz is one of three sculptures from my BFA thesis show- Birds- a series of works dealing with internal psychological struggle.

The pelican is chained up in the air with a rope- connected by a key on the other side of a pulley.  The pelican's fate is left in an impossible conundrum.  The key to his escape is paradoxically also what keeps him suspended in the air.  This piece deals with an individual's struggle with destiny- life choices, identity, free will, and the impossible conundrum these ideas create.
