Flavonoid Hydrant, 2019
yard hydrant, pipe, pipe fittings, drain grate, cast aluminum, mdf, paint
"Flavonoids are a diverse group of phytonutrients (plant chemicals) found in almost all fruits and vegetables. Along with carotenoids, they are responsible for the vivid colors in fruits and vegetables."
I like that this piece addresses the cycle of these objects we consume. While Cultivation may cause the viewer to think about origin or how these vegetables are produced (all the work it took for this vegetable to grow, be harvested, transported, and be conveniently available at a store for our consumption), this piece alludes to their demise. I think about my sad vegetables in my fridge that are quickly losing nutrients from the moment they were harvested. The appeal of the vegetable for eating changes as it rots, but the nutritional value as well- something we don't think about as often. We don't think about the cost of convenience for objects to then be consumed (or wasted.)
